Knott's Berry Farm Construction 2012/2013

From Screamscape:

Late 2012 / 2013 - Giga Coaster - Rumor - (9/21/11) Westcoaster stops by Knott’s once again to check out the Haunt build up duing crunch time, as well as checking on that new land clearing. According to the latest rumors, this could be for the park’s long anticipated new mega/giga coaster, though at this point in the game, we may be looking at a 2013 opening or perhaps even a late 2012.
(9/12/11) There may be hope for some kind of new attraction in the works for Knott’s after all it seems, as the latest update over at Westcoaster reports that two sites near GhostRider have been cleared suddenly, sites which should have nothing to do with the Haunt construction taking place elsewhere in the park. Curious… anyone know more?
(8/11/11) It has been awhile since any new rumors have leaked out from the Knott’s camp, as they have been very busy trying to play catch-up with Windseeker all summer, but once again the rumor of a large hyper/mega/giga coaster project in the works for the park’s next big attraction has been reaffirmed.

Here are some links to some pics of the land clearing:

http://www.westcoaster.net/community/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=4392#p99755

http://www.westcoaster.net/updates.php?updateCD=092011&page=14 (also for the rest of the update)

If the rumors of a possible station in the old Kingdom of the Dinosaurs building is true, this will be one MASSIVE coaster. This will also link to the rumors of this coaster traveling through quite a bit of the park, from the old KOD building, over the Bigfoot Rapids, and into the backstage area by the KBF Resort Parking Lot, all the way to Ghost Rider (where the land clearing is taking place) and back into the park (these next quotes are old rumors from last year):

So rumor has it, the sky tower and perilous plunge are out, KOD will be the loading dock. It will be 300 feet tall, and run from Sky tower/ Xcellator to Big Foot, to Ghost Rider. If you get back stage look for the markers around the Four Corners Café, and in front of the rides office.

When I worked there back in 2006, somebody had gotten to see blueprints for what was supposed to be a new hyper coaster. We had seen all the higher ups scouting out the area as well, they were monitoring foot traffic, and it was all supposed to take place in the old Kingdom of the Dinosaurs building, thats where the station was going to be, with the queue taking out the arcade below and the drop turning out over I believe the street behind it was Western, can't recall, and into the employee parking lot for a Hammerhead turn, then over Bigfoot Rapids, and continue all over the place. Then, out of nowhere, in our eyes, everything was dropped, or put on hold. Maybe this is it, but changed a bit? It was supposed to be at least a 2 year construction process since it took up so much room. Hopefully something of the same is going to happen. It would actually give me a reason to visit again.

Also a new rumor from Bolliger&Mabillard at ThemeParkReview:

There is a rumor that when (if) this coaster starts to go up, every area except Snoopy and Fiesta will be affected. Is it possible that this clearing has to do with a 2012 attraction? Maybe. But me thinks it has to do moreso with GhostRider's rehab. I don't know, haven't seen which area they're referring to.

As for the opening, I kind of expect it to be in late 2012. They are starting construction now, and it just makes sense for a late 2012 opening, as Knott's has done openings of new rides late in the year, particularly December (Ghost Rider in 1998, Silver Bullet in 2004). I can really see this attraction opening in late 2012, and the LATEST would be 2013.

I think this project will be one of the biggest coaster projects I have ever seen, and if the rumors are true, this may be the tallest and fastest non-launched coaster in the world. Once it gets announced (if it happens that is), I think it will be a very big day in the amusement industry.

Avatar Coming to Animal Kingdom!

This just came out of the left field:

We have great news to share today. At a press conference happening right now at Walt Disney Imagineering, Bob Iger and Tom Staggs just announced a long-term creative partnership with James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment and Fox Filmed Entertainment to bring the fantasy world of AVATAR to life at Disney Parks. And it’ll all begin at Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort.

James and his producing partner Jon Landau and their team at Lightstorm Entertainment will serve as creative consultants on the project and will work side-by-side with our Walt Disney Imagineers as we dream up experiences that will take our guests deep into worlds of AVATAR like never before. There are also two sequels to the record setting first film in the works, which will offer more fascinating stories, characters and locations to explore in the AVATAR universe. Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort is planned as the site of the first AVATAR-themed land with construction expected to begin by 2013.

We believe Disney’s Animal Kingdom is a great fit for this project because it was created to give guests the opportunity to experience the worlds of animals and nature – real and mythical – in new ways. Disney’s Animal Kingdom also celebrates adventure, living in harmony with nature and environmental stewardship – themes that are deeply rooted in the story of AVATAR.

The design phase on the Disney’s Animal Kingdom project has just begun so stay tuned to the Disney Parks Blog for more details.

Got questions about the announcement? If so, Tom Staggs will be answering them in a special Q&A blog post later today. Just submit your name, city where you’re from and your question to questionsfortom@disney.com and then check the Disney Parks Blog later to see some of the answers.

http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2011/09/avatar-coming-to-disney-parks/

This look like a pretty cool addition to Animal Kingdom! I actually would prefer this over the rumored Avatar 4D coming to Universal (now officially "poof!"). I hope they add some sick rides (Tower of Terror-esque rides, or even more thrilling)!

I was pretty shocked though. I thought for sure that Avatar would come to Universal. I wonder how Disney will build this.

And now another thing... what will become of T2:3D? With the constant rumors of it closing, and now a James Cameron attraction going up at Disney, I have a feeling that this won't be Avatar replacing Terminator... but maybe the rumored Transformers ride?

But yeah, this looks nice, and I hope Disney does something cool with this! =)

Is Transformers Actually Coming to Universal Orlando?!

I've been talking on and on about the possibility of the Transformers ride coming to USF for the past few years (ever since I first heard of the USH/USS rides, and that misinformed Screamscape report a few years back). Looks like after years of talking about it... it may actually happen:

Here’s a Universal theme park-related quote from Steven Spielberg, who chatted with Sentinel movie critic Roger Moore over the weekend.

“I always like to hear that people are still coming to the attractions we already have in the park. I know everybody’s going to Harry Potter right now. But we think Transformers is going to pretty amazing. We’ve been working on that for about three years now. It should be ready soon. I don’t have an announcement, yet, but it should be coming there soon,” Spielberg said.

Transformers attractions are currently under construction at Universal parks in Singapore and Hollywood. Universal Orlando officials said Monday that they had no announcement to make about one being constructed here.

http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/features_orlando/2011/09/spielberg-transformers-announcement-should-be-soon.html

Are the “Robots in Disguise” on the way to Universal Orlando? Steven Spielberg is saying so.

Plans are on the way to bring the Transformers attraction, currently slated to open in Universal’s California and Singapore parks next year, to Universal Orlando. According to the Orlando Sentinel, the director told film critic Roger Moore that an announcement is coming soon.

“We’ve been working on that for about three years now. It should be ready soon. I don’t have an announcement, yet, but it should be coming there soon”. Spielberg said.

Fans of the franchise, and the Universal Orlando theme parks, have been clamoring for an Orlando edition since the ride was announced for Orlando’s sister parks back in 2008.

Stay tuned to Orlando United as we will surely cover any announcement made for the rumored attraction.

http://orlandounited.com/2011/09/19/transformers-coming-to-universal-orlando/

I've been thinking and hoping this will come for years. I mean sure, I'm not the biggest Transformer fan, but IMO it has the potential to be a pretty sweet ride! But now the question is... where to put it?

I think a perfect place for it would be Disaster. The name for this attraction is pretty self-explanatory (ahem... a complete DISASTER). Disaster is basically a cheap and stupid version of Earthquake (which, dare I say it, was WAY better). Transformers would fit nice there. I'd say T2:3D, but I'm leaning towards Avatar for that space.

However... will it use the same ride system as Spidey though? I mean, it's possible, but new rumors point to an entirely new ride system, supposedly better than even Harry Potter & the Forbidden Journey! That would be a cool move IMO, but I wonder how it will be though? Oh well, that's the nice part of speculation! =D

I'll keep you updated on any further developments!

UPDATE 9/24/11:

From Screamscape:

???? - Transformers - Rumor - (9/21/11) Screamscape sources tell us that Spielberg apparently misspoke and that there are currently no plans to bring the Transformers attraction to Universal Orlando at this point in time.

Personally, I doubt this. I have respect for Screamscape, but they're not ALWAYS right. I doubt Spielberg would misspeak about Transformers. Maybe it is just Universal trying to shoot these rumors down.

For example, Six Flags Great America last summer shot the rumors down of Iron Wolf closing and moving to SFA, and now look what we have (Apocalypse). Maybe this Transformers ride is very top secret, and Universal is trying to shoot down the rumors until an official announcement.

I doubt the "Transformers coming to Orlando" rumor is dead. But we'll see... and as before, I'll keep you updated!

New Drop Tower for BGT 2012/2013?

From Screamscape:

2012 / 2013 - Drop Tower - Rumor - (9/19/11) I’m not sure how serious this rumor is, but someone is claiming that the park’s Sand Storm flat ride could be replaced by a new 200 foot drop tower ride, possibly very similar to the Mach Tower ride that just opened in Williamsburg last month. Anyone know more?

I've actually discussed the possibility of the next ride for BGT being a Drop Tower (before Cheetah Hunt was announced). I made an idea for a drop tower right next to SheiKra.

As for the rumored location... IDK. It would look pretty cool in the Sandstorm area, however I hope Sandstorm gets relocated to another part of the park like BGW's Catapult (which got removed for Mäch Tower). It is a very fun ride! However, I would welcome a drop tower to the park. Like I said, BGT lacks in flat rides. They have Phoenix (which I've actually ridden recently, and I really liked it), Ubanga Banga Bumper Cars (another fun ride), Sandstorm (fun ride, but rumored to get removed), and Caravan Carousel (pretty self-explanatory). It would be really cool to drop from a height as tall as (if not taller than) SheiKra. I also wonder if this means new theming in the Timbuktu area (like what happened with BGW's Oktoberfest). That would be neat!

If this is true, I'm predicting a height taller than 200 ft (unlike what Screamscape reported), and the maker being either Intamin or Moser (the reason why I brought up Intamin was this: what if BG didn't like Moser after all the problems with Mäch Tower last summer? But you never know). If Intamin, it will probably be a Gyro (Drop Tower at KD)/Giant Drop (Drop Tower at Carowinds) design.

Hopefully we do get a drop tower, as it would be a perfect addition to the park! I still want a B&M Hyper, Flyer, and a Spider-Man/DarKastle type ride though (as well as more Intamin rides)! ;)

California's Great America to be Sold

So I was strolling the internet today, and I found out some SHOCKING news:

http://www.cedarfair.com/ir/press_releases/index.cfm?current_root=15&mode=story&story_id=321

SANDUSKY, Ohio, Sept. 19, 2011 -- Cedar Fair (NYSE: FUN), a leader in regional amusement parks, water parks and active entertainment, today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to sell its California's Great America amusement park, located in Santa Clara, California, to JMA Ventures, LLC ("JMA") for $70 million in cash. The Company, which purchased the park in 2006, expects to use the cash proceeds from this sale to reduce its senior secured debt.

"Our decision to divest of our California's Great America park was not an easy one," said Dick Kinzel, Cedar Fair's chief executive officer. "This is a quality park that has terrific employees and serves a strong market. That being said, as part of our regular comprehensive review of our portfolio of parks, we determined that divesting a smaller park like California's Great America at an attractive market value created a compelling business opportunity that we couldn't pass up. Among other things, it provides us the opportunity to immediately de-lever our balance sheet resulting in additional financial flexibility for growth and unitholder value creation in the future. California's Great America and its employees have always demonstrated tremendous capability in providing its customers with the highest level of family entertainment in the northern California region. I'm confident the park and its employees will continue to thrive under the ownership of JMA."

"As we look toward 2012, we are building significant momentum for Cedar Fair to deliver consistent and meaningful distributions to our unitholders," said Matt Ouimet, Cedar Fair's president. "At the same time, we remain committed to driving top-line growth through a combination of new rides and attractions, marketing initiatives and related strategic expansion around our entire portfolio of premier entertainment venues. The divestiture of California's Great America will provide us with additional financial flexibility earlier than anticipated to achieve these goals and maintain Cedar Fair's position as one of the most attractive growth and yield stories in the leisure and hospitality industry."

The transaction, which is subject to approval by the City of Santa Clara and customary closing conditions, is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2011. Cash proceeds received at closing are expected to be applied to the Company's senior secured debt under the terms of the Company's credit agreement. A Form 8-K with the material terms of the definitive agreement will be filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission by the end of day Tuesday.

California's Great America is northern California's leading amusement park, with more than 50 rides and attractions. JMA Ventures, LLC is a California-based full service real estate investment firm, serving as managing partner of over $500 million in existing projects spanning hospitality, leisure, residential developments, retail, office and industrial/telecom.

About Cedar Fair

Cedar Fair is a publicly traded partnership headquartered in Sandusky, Ohio, and one of the largest regional amusement-resort operators in the world. The Company owns and operates 11 amusement parks, six outdoor water parks, one indoor water park and five hotels. Amusement parks in the Company's northern region include two in Ohio: Cedar Point, consistently voted "Best Amusement Park in the World" in Amusement Today polls, and Kings Island; as well as Canada's Wonderland, near Toronto; Dorney Park, PA; Valleyfair, MN; and Michigan's Adventure, MI. In the southern region are Kings Dominion, VA; Carowinds, NC; and Worlds of Fun, MO. Western parks in California include: Knott's Berry Farm; California's Great America; and Gilroy Gardens, which is managed under contract.

Forward-Looking Statements

Some of the statements contained in this news release constitute "forward-looking statements" within the meaning of the safe harbor provisions of the United States Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995, including statements as to the Company's expectations, beliefs and strategies regarding the future. These statements may involve risk and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ materially from those described in such statements. Although the Company believes that the expectations reflected in such forward-looking statements are reasonable, it can give no assurance that such expectations will prove to have been correct. Important factors, including general economic conditions, adverse weather conditions, competition for consumer leisure time and spending, unanticipated construction delays and other factors discussed from time to time by the Company in reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (the "SEC") could affect attendance at our parks and cause actual results to differ materially from the Company's expectations. Additional information on risk factors that may affect the business and financial results of the Company can be found in the Company's Annual Report on Form 10-K and in the filings of the Company made from time to time with the SEC. The Company undertakes no obligation to correct or update any forward-looking statements, whether as a result of new information, future events or otherwise.

And yeah, I meant nothing but sarcasm out of the word "SHOCKING."

This came as no surprise to me. Pretty much the only thing I found kind of surprising was that Cedar Fair didn't take Flight Deck and Vortex; however, after thinking about it, I think CF wanted to make the park look attracting for the sale. So now we pretty much know the reason why Invertigo was removed earlier this year (and sent to Dorney Park as Stinger).

Here is the company, JMA Ventures:

http://www.jmaventuresllc.com/

One thing I find scary is this:

JMA Ventures is a full service real estate investment firm, serving as managing partner of over $500 Million in existing projects spanning hospitality, leisure, residential developments, retail, office and industrial/telecom.

Founded in 1986, our San Francisco based company has focused on delivering superior risk adjusted returns to our investors while providing quality products and improving the communities and environments in which we conduct business.

Our value-added approach has delivered outperforming returns across our portfolio base during our 20 year history.

JMA Ventures has not only proven itself as a real estate investment firm resulting in high returns for their investors, but has also become an expert in developing and redeveloping large scale lifestyle properties. JMA is a full service firm combining cutting edge ideas with the know-how and ability to deliver.

JMA has no theme park involvement, but it has real estate involvement. Hopefully what I'm thinking doesn't come true (I doubt it. If the park gets demolished, it will be for the 49ers Stadium).

However, there is a possibility of JMA making CGA an entertainment area to accompany the supposed 49ers Stadium (placing it on the overflow parking lot). I read another article saying that they like the park and hope to keep its unique appeal. It seems possible, but I'm not sure...

I'll keep you guys updated! ;)

Six Flags Parks 2012

Six Flags Great America:

While Dollywood is getting America's first Wing Coaster, SFGAm was the first American park to announce a Wing Coaster.

http://news.sixflags.com/2012news/2011/08/26/x-flight/

Gurnee, Ill. (September 1, 2011) – Get ready to take flight! Six Flags Great America announces plans to add a state-of-the-art roller coaster for the 2012 season. X-Flight is a ground-breaking wing coaster featuring cutting-edge technology. The Gurnee theme park is the first to announce plans for a wing coaster in the U.S.

X-Flight will take riders on a flight that defies gravity, with no track above or below them. Riders sit in pairs, suspended on either side of the track with their feet dangling, as they begin their climb up a 12-story plunge launching them into speeds of 55mph through 3,000 feet of intense drops and five inversions, including a barrel roll and zero-g roll. One of the most adrenaline-pumping moments on the ride is an extreme fly-through where the coaster speeds straight toward a structure, before making a last-minute vertical flip to fit through a keyhole cut-out.

“Six Flags Great America has a long history of introducing legendary rides and first-of-its-kind roller coasters,” said Hank Salemi, Six Flags Great America Park President. “What makes X-Flight so unique is soaring through 3,000 feet of high-speed drops, loops and turns, with nothing above or below you. The coaster’s train actually looks like a plane with seats suspended on either side of the track. It’s like nothing you have ever experienced before. We are thrilled to bring this revolutionary wing coaster to our guests for the 2012 season.”

X-Flight is designed by acclaimed Swiss manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard, who also designed Six Flags Great America favorites: Raging Bull, SUPERMAN: Ultimate Flight and BATMAN: The Ride. The wing coaster will make its home in the County Fair section of the park. Construction begins this Fall. X-Flight is scheduled to open Spring of 2012.

Six Flags Great America is located between Chicago and Milwaukee and offers fun for the entire family with 14 heart-pounding roller coasters, a free 20-acre water park, spectacular shows, a nighttime illuminated parade and three children’s themed areas. Soar on X-Flight all season long with a 2012 Season Pass, now on sale for $64.99 for four or more. Buy now and get a
2012 Season Parking Pass free. Sale ends October 30, 2011.

About Six Flags Entertainment Corporation

Six Flags Entertainment Corporation is the world’s largest regional theme park company with 2010 revenue of nearly $1.0 billion and 19 parks across the United States, Mexico and Canada. Six Flags Over Texas, the company’s flagship location, is celebrating its 50th anniversary season in 2011.

This kind of reminds me of Swarm going up at Thorpe Park. Anyways, I really like this ride (probably the most exciting out of all the announcements), especially that "keyhole" effect (hm... perfect for my IOA Wing Coaster idea)!

Six Flags Magic Mountain:

For next year, SFMM is building the tallest drop tower in the world:

Another one for the history books, Six Flags Magic Mountain, in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products and DC Entertainment, announced today the world’s tallest vertical drop ride, LEX LUTHOR: Drop of Doom, will make its debut for the 2012 season. Named after one of DC Comics’ most dangerously intelligent super-villains and Superman’s greatest enemy, LEX LUTHOR: Drop of Doom will be an engineering phenomenon, attached to both sides of the iconic SUPERMAN: Escape from Krypton tower. Soaring at a sky-scraping 400 feet, LEX LUTHOR: Drop of Doom is slated for a spring 2012 launch.

Fearless riders will be seated inside floorless gondolas on two vertical tracks flanking each side of the SUPERMAN: Escape from Krypton tower. Passengers on the gondolas will be pulled to the top of the tower, experience a brief pause before being released and dropped at speeds of up to 85 miles-per-hour. After five seconds of freefall, the gondola will be stopped by a sophisticated magnetic braking system just a few feet from the ground.

“Six Flags is known world-wide as the industry leader in delivering world-class thrills, and Six Flags Magic Mountain is proud to be at the head of the pack, offering guests the biggest and the best,” said Bonnie Rabjohn, Six Flags Magic Mountain Park President. “We are excited to add another world record to our collection of record-breaking, first-on-the-planet attractions.”

Changing Magic Mountain’s legendary skyline, LEX LUTHOR: Drop of Doom will offer riders breathtaking panoramic views as they are lifted to the top of the tallest vertical drop ride ever built. Sitting eight abreast, riders will plummet 40 stories at an extreme speed before coming to a stop, all while the SUPERMAN: Escape from Krypton cars are blasted to the top of the same structure.

“Six Flags Magic Mountain continues to deliver powerful thrills to our guests year after year,” said Jim Reid-Anderson, Chairman, President and CEO of Six Flags Entertainment Corporation. “LEX LUTHOR: Drop of Doom is a tremendous addition and brings a new dimension of excitement to the park’s already remarkable collection of thrill rides.”

LEX LUTHOR: Drop of Doom is being manufactured exclusively for Six Flags Magic Mountain by Intamin AG of Switzerland.

Someone actually thought of the idea of a drop tower on the side of S:EFK at some point.

Anyways, this ride looks really... insane. Tallest drop tower in the world (at least 400 ft)! That looks like an awesome addition to an already amazing park like SFMM!

Six Flags New England:

Looks like Deja Vu is moving to SFNE and will now be known as Goliath:

http://news.sixflags.com/2012news/2011/08/26/goliath/

Six Flags New England, home to the largest collection of coasters in the Northeast, today announced the addition of Goliath a suspended looping boomerang coaster that will leave guests wondering which way is up! New England’s newest coaster will reside in the Crack Axle Canyon section of the park and will make its debut in late spring of 2012.

The ride experience will begin when guests are strapped into chairs suspended from the track above, Goliath sends riders dangling face-down out of the station and up the first tower. Once riders reach the top of the tower they are dropped into a complete vertical 18-story free-fall reaching speeds of 65 miles-per-hour before racing head-over-heels on the outside of a 102-foot-tall vertical loop followed by an enormous 110-foot-tall butterfly turn before rocketing up the second 19-story tower. Think that’s all…hold on, there’s more as guests are sent rocketing back through the entire experience all over again with nothing beneath their feet but earth and sky.

“Six Flags New England is thrilled to announce the addition of Goliath to our already amazing arsenal of rides,” said Jason Freeman, Six Flags New England park president. “This ride delivers pure adrenaline from start to finish and solidifies our commitment to adding high volume fun for the entire family.” Goliath joins an incredible line up of coasters including: Cyclone, Batman The Dark Knight, Mind Eraser and of course the top rated steel coaster, Bizarro. When coaster enthusiasts are looking for thrills and excitement, Six Flags New England is their #1 choice! Six Flags New England is also home to three dedicated children’s areas, entertaining shows, FREE concerts and New England’s largest water park. Guests can experience Goliath-sized thrills all season long with a 2012 Season Pass! Buy three (3) 2012 Season Passes today for $59.99, and get one (1) FREE, plus receive FREE parking. Season passes must be processed by October 30, 2011 to receive FREE parking and can be used for the remainder of the 2011 season. Weird how they called it "Goliath" when it seems more fitting for a hypercoaster... =/

This looks like a nice addition to SFNE, but I can think of two other weird things:

They are putting up Goliath right next to Flashback in the old boat site, RIGHT NEXT TO a Vekoma Boomerang (Flashback) with the cobra rolls facing each other (I thought it going up in SFNE was weird enough with the boomerang, but right next to it =/).

Another weird thing is that SFMM is even removing it. They worked hard on gaining the coaster crown from Cedar Point; now they're just going to let it go?

Glad to see the ride saved though. I actually saw it at SFMM last winter, and it looked pretty sick looking. Too bad it was down! =( But if I go to SFNE (yes IF), I can ride Deja Vu/Goliath!

Six Flags America:

The first B&M ever built is getting a new home in SFA, and will be known as Apocalypse (like SFMM's former Terminator Salvation coaster):

http://news.sixflags.com/2012news/2011/08/26/six-flags-america-announces-apocalypse/

The end is near as Six Flags America prepares to face the Apocalypse in 2012! Mayhem comes to Maryland’s favorite theme park in the form of a 100-foot mean machine roller coaster. Guests will take a stand against the end of the world in an all-new, stand-up, steel adventure.

Upon approaching Apocalypse, located in the Skull Island area of the park, guests will wind through a queue stepping further and further into an end of the world scenario. Just when it looks bleak, riders will break out to make the final stand against obliteration. They’ll stand four abreast together, while making the 100-foot ascent to the ride’s apex. For two minutes, they’ll hurtle along the 2,900-foot steel track, feeling the rush of 55 miles-per-hour speeds, hairpin turns, and pulse-pounding inversions.

The Apocalypse is planned to begin at Six Flags America on Friday, May 25, 2012 with a grand opening observance in the morning as the park opens and a thrilling display of fire in the sky that evening. 2012 Six Flags America Season Pass holders will be invited to be amongst the first to brave the ride in a two-day preview event on Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20, 2012. Season passes are on sale today at sixflags.com/America.

Apocalypse has been designed by Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M) of Switzerland. This is Six Flags America’s first B&M coaster as well as the park’s first stand-up coaster. Apocalypse promises to add to a whole new high-intensity thrill to Maryland’s favorite theme park, complementing the park’s arsenal of world-class roller coasters, thrill rides, and water park. The seven current roller coasters at Six Flags America are anchored by the 200-foot SUPERMAN: Ride of Steel; and highlighted by BATWING, Maryland’s first flying coaster; and the classic wooden Wild One, which celebrates its 95th year of thrills in 2012.

I'm glad Iron Wolf has been saved! I mean, while it is supposedly painful from what I hear, I respect it, since it is B&M's first coaster! =) Also glad that SFA is finally getting a coaster (I would have preferred a new one, but this is okay, especially if it gets the rumored new trains).

Six Flags Great Adventure:

Looks like SFGAdv has entered the Star Flyer battle (along with another SF park that I'll mention after this):

http://news.sixflags.com/2012news/2011/08/26/greatadventure/

Six Flags Great Adventure, America’s largest regional theme park, today unveiled plans to add both extreme and family thrills to its current lineup for 2012. SkyScreamer, an extreme swing ride, will transform the Fantasy Forest skyline while three additional family rides are introduced to the whimsically-themed section below – bumper cars, scrambler and flying elephants.

Theme park guests will have more to scream about with the introduction of SkyScreamer. The newest sensation in tower rides, SkyScreamer will take swing rides to the next level and join the park’s already breathtaking lineup of thrills as it whisks guests up, up and away high over the park, feet dangling and hair blowing. Towering 15 stories above the ground, SkyScreamer will reside next to the classic Big Wheel. Thirty-two guests will board the ride and sit two across in open-air swings as they climb to the top of the SkyScreamer tower while spinning round and round. At full swing, guests will soar in a 98-ft. circle at speeds of 40 mph high above the park below.

For those wishing to keep their feet closer to the ground, the park is introducing two new, yet classic, family attractions – bumper cars and a music-themed scrambler. Guests will also be greeted with the return of the popular flying elephants ride, which formerly made its home in The Golden Kingdom section of the theme park.

“Although we are best known for our record-breaking thrills, families have told us they would like more attractions they can enjoy together. So this season we are introducing four rides sure to deliver fun for all ages,” said park president John Fitzgerald.

At Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, it’s go big, go extreme – with the addition of exciting, new drop boxes guaranteed to ramp up the thrill factor at the slide tower known as “The Falls.” Guests will climb into a clear, fully-enclosed launch capsule and begin the nerve-wracking countdown to the moment when the floor literally disappears beneath them and sends them into a freefall at speeds of up to 32 mph.

“Drop boxes are an innovative, exciting addition to our already thrilling speed slides,” Fitzgerald added. “They are not for the faint of heart. The sheer anticipation of waiting for the floor to drop will have our guests’ adrenaline pumping.”

The best way to enjoy the thrills of the 2012 season is with a season pass. 2012 season passes are currently on sale and a great family value at $59.99 per person, which includes the theme park and free admission to the Wild Safari; and for just $10 more provides admission to Hurricane Harbor water park. All season passes include free tickets for friends and unlimited access to this season’s Fright Fest Halloween celebration in October. Guests who process their passes by October 30, 2011 receive one free parking pass with every four season passes purchased-a $50 value. For more information, visit www.sixflags.com/greatadventure

Shocking how it will only be 15 stories high (presumably the smaller SFDK-esque version). I figured it would be WindSeeker-sized. But that will do! ;) I'm really intrigued by these drop boxes on water slides. Hopefully some water park in Florida (Rapids Water Park, Aquatica, Adventure Island, Wet N' Wild, and the two Disney water parks) will add a drop boxed-water slide.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas:

Yes, this park will also get a SkyScreamer:

http://news.sixflags.com/2012news/2011/08/26/fiestatexas/

September 1, 2011 – San Antonio, TX – Six Flags Fiesta Texas revealed plans today to give guests more to scream about in 2012 with the introduction of SkyScreamer. The newest sensation in tower rides, SkyScreamer joins the park’s already spectacular lineup of thrills as it takes guests skyward, high above the park. The addition of SkyScreamer continues Six Flags Fiesta Texas’ tradition of providing thrilling rides and award-winning live entertainment. A selection of new and returning show favorites will also be featured in 2012.

Towering 200-ft. above the ground, SkyScreamer will surpass the height of the park’s quarry walls. Thirty-two guests will board the ride and sit two across in open air swings as they climb to the top of the SkyScreamer tower while spinning round and round. At full swing, guests will soar in a 98-ft. circle at speeds of 40 mph with the rest of the park far below their dangling feet.

“SkyScreamer will provide a breathtaking, panoramic view towering above our unique park setting. From the vantage point of these thrilling, open-air swings, guests will have an unusual birds’ eye perspective of the San Antonio skyline as they soar to new heights,” stated Park President Martin Bozer.

By day, guests will have an aerial view for miles past the cliff walls and even into downtown. By night, SkyScreamer will provide a totally different experience. SkyScreamer will take flight in Spring 2012.

Guests may enjoy Six Flags Fiesta Texas all season long including the new SkyScreamer, concerts and special events with a 2012 Season Pass. Now through October 30, 2011 guests can purchase a 2012 Season Pass and get the rest of 2011 FREE including Fright Fest and Holiday in the Park! Guests who purchase and process a 2012 Season Pass 4-Pack by October 30, 2011 will receive a special price of $56.99 (plus tax) per pass and free Season Parking Pass. A Season Pass offers unlimited visits to both the theme park and White Water Bay water park and comes with over $300 of in-park savings on food, games and souvenirs, free tickets for friends and access to exclusive events. It is the best deal to experience the best thrills!

This also looks like a cool addition to SFFT.

And now the Star Flyer vs WindSeeker battle moves to the center of the USA (if Worlds of Fun gets one)...

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom:

Now, X-Flight may be my favorite of the announcements, but this is the most interesting one though:

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Announces New Thrill Coaster in 2012 — SUPERMAN Ultimate Flight

New Thrill Coaster is Park’s First DC Comics-Themed Attraction

The familiar refrain, “It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman!” will become part of Six Flags Discovery Kingdom’s lexicon with the official announcement today of the park’s exciting new roller coaster, SUPERMAN Ultimate Flight. The ride, created in a partnership between Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, Warner Bros. Consumer Products and DC Entertainment, is slated to open in spring 2012.

This one-of-a-kind super launch coaster features the tallest inversion west of the Mississippi and will rank alongside the tallest coaster inversions in the world. At 150 feet high, riders will experience lightning speeds of 62 miles per hour, with two upside-down twists and two vertical rolls over a track length of 863 feet.

“We’re excited to bring this caliber of ride to Discovery Kingdom,” said Dale Kaetzel, Park President. “Since we opened our super coaster Medusa in 2000, the public has been waiting for a ride to match that intensity. We believe that SUPERMAN Ultimate Flight will satisfy even the most fearless thrill-seeker, and then some.”

As Discovery Kingdom’s first DC Comics-themed ride, the new addition is the perfect complement to the park’s unique collection of marine life, wildlife and wild rides. Thrill rides include the aforementioned Medusa, along with Kong, Roar, Vertical Velocity and Boomerang, and SUPERMAN Ultimate Flight’s addition solidifies Discovery Kingdom’s standing as Northern California’s best place to experience thrills of all kinds.

Brightly painted in Superman’s colors — vibrant blue, red and yellow — the steel coaster will be visible from Highway 37 and beyond from its location on the eastern side of the park. Construction on SUPERMAN Ultimate Flight will begin in early 2012.

SUPERMAN Ultimate Flight is being manufactured for Six Flags Six Flags Discovery Kingdom by Premier Rides.

At first when I saw this, I thought it would be made by Maurer Sohne (the people who did HRRR and some Skyloop coasters) but then I read it was Premier and got really intrigued. I mean, I know SFDK is known for having unique rides (V2, an Impulse that inverts (though that was because of height restrictions), and Medusa, B&M Floorless with a Sea Serpant roll) but... WOW! This is probably my 2nd favorite of the SF 2012 announcements.

This will supposedly replace Pandemonium, which may relocate to Six Flags Mexico soon.

Six Flags St. Louis:

SFSL is building a rather interesting water slide:

http://news.sixflags.com/2012news/2011/08/26/bonzaipipeline/

ST. LOUIS, MO – September 1, 2011 – Six Flags St. Louis today announced plans to add an extreme body slide, Bonzai Pipeline, to Hurricane Harbor in 2012. Bonzai Pipeline joins the
12-acre water park’s existing lineup of water attractions as the only looping body slide with a launching capsule. Hurricane Harbor opened in 1999 and remains Missouri’s only free water park with theme park admission.

Bonzai Pipeline is the ultimate wipeout experience featuring twin, looping slides that sit side by side and the Proslide Skybox launching capsule. After reaching the top of the 6-story structure, guests will step into the enclosed capsule where the floor drops out beneath them, sending them free-falling down the slide and into a side “super loop.” Riders will surf the 290-ft. slide at up to 40 mph. Bonzai Pipeline’s clear tubes allow spectators below to watch riders as they shoot through the 360˚ loops and splash out into the water below.

“Hurricane Harbor is already a favorite of our guests during their visit to Six Flags St. Louis,” said Dave Roemer, Six Flags St. Louis park president. “The addition of Bonzai Pipeline makes the water park an even greater value while providing a new element of extreme thrill that we think guests are really going to love.”

Bonzai Pipeline, manufactured by Proslide Technology, Inc., is scheduled to open May 2012. The body slide will be located to the west side of the wave pool and will have a 48” height requirement.

Six Flags St. Louis is also launching the sale of 2012 Season Passes. For a limited time, guests purchasing four or more 2012 Season Passes will receive a special price of just $46.99 per pass, the price of a one-day ticket, and one free Season Parking Pass. Season Passes must be purchased and processed by October 30, 2011 for this special offer. A 2012 Season Pass will not only let guests experience all that Six Flags St. Louis and Hurricane Harbor have to offer including the new Bonzai Pipeline, but guests can use the Season Pass for the remainder of the 2011 season including Fright Fest in October. A Season Pass offers the best value with unlimited visits to the theme park and water park and comes with a coupon book featuring over $300 in special offers including limited free concerts. A Season Pass can also be used at all
Six Flags theme parks throughout the country.

This type of water slide is really cool looking! This is one I hope goes up in Adventure Island or Aquatica (or Rapids Water Park)! =)

The Great Escape:

TGE is adding a similar water slide to the one ^ above:

http://news.sixflags.com/2012news/2011/08/26/alpinefreefalls/

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y., (September 1, 2011) – The Great Escape’s popular outdoor water park, Splashwater Kingdom goes big in 2012! The Great Escape and Splashwater Kingdom today announced plans to add Alpine Freefalls, a two level water slide complex set to open May 2012. The new attraction will boast the park’s first free fall speed slide with Skybox technology and the Northeast’s first of its kind mat racer.

Guests will face their biggest fears when they take on the double black diamond Cliffhanger water slide. Perched six stories high, riders will count to three before the floor drops from below, plunging them at speeds of up to 32 mph down an 80 degree drop into six inches of water. The plummet slide will complement the popular Tornado water slide, offering thrill seekers the ultimate water park adventure.

For those looking for a little competition, Twisted Racer is a four-story, four-lane race through enclosed tunnels, giving guests the chance to compete with friends and family at speeds of over 25 feet per second. Riders will race on mats through pretzel shaped tubes before opening up into a final drop and a straight shot to the finish line where each competitor’s time will be displayed on LED boards.

“Alpine Freefalls will offer our guests an extreme water ride experience combined with friendly competition,” said Don McCoy, President of The Six Flags Great Escape Properties. “We believe this multi-slide attraction will be a great enhancement to the water park and offer guests an attraction that is as fun to watch as it is to ride.” McCoy added, “From our coasters and shows, to our two children’s areas and free water park, there is no other theme park in the area that offers the tremendous amount of thrills we do for one price.”

More information about Alpine Freefalls will be released during a hard hat tour of the attraction’s construction site in the spring of 2012.

Splashwater Kingdom, including the all-new Alpine Freefalls is free with park admission or season pass. 2012 Season Passes are now on sale. Buy yours today for $49.99 and visit during the rest of the 2011 season, including Fright Fest, FREE. Also, when you purchase four or more season passes, get FREE parking for the 2012 season. Offer ends October 30, 2011.

Overall these are nice additions SFI! 2012 is shaping up to be an epic year!

Dollywood to Build Wild Eagle

Within the past few months (I intended to report it on the blog but kept forgetting), blue B&M track has appeared at Dollywood in Tennessee. Now it is confirmed, after months of rumors, that Dollywood will build America's first Wing Coaster, as well as the largest of its kind:

Dollywood's big announcement at Boomsday about a roller coaster that'll give riders a chance to feel like they're flying is already a work in progress.

Brian Mitchell is one of the few folks that braved the weather and visited Dollywood on Monday.

"I just love Dollywood. I'm from Virginia, and I just cant find anywhere other than Dollywood...anywhere reasonable," said Brian Mitchell.

The weather didn't bring the typical holiday crowds to the park this Labor day, but before you know it, park employees are expecting people to pile in, so that they can visit the newest attraction.

"We announced the largest expansion of Dollywood ever at Boomsday last night," said Pete Owens, Public Relations Director at Dollywood.

It's called the "Wild Eagle" and the $19 million roller coaster is the first one of its kind in the U.S.

"Instead of riding on the center part of the roller coaster like you are used to, you ride out on one of the wings on either sides," said Owens.

At 61 miles per hour, you'll have the chance to experience what it's like to sit on the wings of a flying wild eagle.

"It's much more of a swooping motion like you would be on the wings of a bird," said Owens.

The ride that will debut when the park opens for the season next March is already getting global attention.

"I've had emails over the last couple of days anticipating the announcement we were going to make last night from people as far away as England and Germany telling me that they were planning on coming," said Owens.

Mitchell said he's planning on coming back, too. He's been following the clues about the coaster for a while on the Dollywood website.

"I'm just looking forward to sensation...having to freedom to fly like a wild eagle," said Mitchell.

For all of you that sent a text to the Dollywood short code Sunday, check your phones on Tuesday. The winner will be contacted sometime throughout the day and will have to reply before the end of the day to receive lifetime passes for up to seven family members in the household.

Carowinds:

Carowinds will be building their own WindSeeker in 2012 in the Carolina RFD section of the park (presumably in one of the lakes by Nighthawk):

WindSeeker will send riders soaring 301 feet above the park at over 30 miles per hour and provide dramatic views of the greater Charlotte region.

WindSeeker’s three minute ride begins when the ride’s carriage, featuring 32 two passenger swings, slowly rotates while climbing to the top of a 301-foot tower. Riders will experience a sense of weightlessness as the swings reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour and the arms extend outward at a 45-degree angle.

Kings Island:

For next year, Kings Island will transform their Boomerang Bay water park into Soak City (like Cedar Point, Knott's, and Valleyfair):

The Kings Island amusement park in Mason announced a major expansion at its Boomerang Bay water park, changing its name to Soak City.

Kings Island, which is owned by Cedar Fair Entertainment said it will add 3,000 square feet to its wave pool and make enhancements to its volley ball courts and lawn areas. It also will add 1,000 lounge chairs, more shaded areas for pool-goers and new family dressing rooms. The new improvements will be ready for the 2012 season, the park said.

The water park expansion is the latest enhancement at Kings Island, located just north of Cincinnati. The park this year added a swing attraction called Windseeker and the Dinosaurs Alive animatronic dinosaur park.

Dorney Park:

Looks like Dorney Park has confirmed Stinger, the former Invertigo coaster from CGA:

Feel your heart pump with adrenaline after experiencing this scorpion's sting! Sit back and find yourself dangling from the scorpion tail seated face-to-face with your friends as you each sit witness to the others terror. You'll scream your face off as you are lifted up a 138-foot lift hill and then released to soar at speeds reaching 55 miles per hour through three inversions both forward and then backward.

Cedar Point:

Next year, Cedar Point will also build Dinosaurs Alive on Millennium Island (on the right side of the island, which contains part of Millennium Force and Shoot the Rapids) as well as a new water slide:

Cedar Point announced Friday morning that it will take the Sandusky amusement park back to prehistoric times.

Dinosaurs Alive! on Adventure Island will be introduced to the park in summer 2012, park officials say. The new attraction will be located on four acres on the wooded island in the lagoon area where the Paddlewheel has operated.

In addition to the dinosaur exhibit, park officials say a mat-race slide will be added to Soak City next summer.

The new dinosaur exhibit will cost about $1 million and will include 50 life-size animatronic dinosaurs. A Dinosaurs Alive! exhibit was installed at Kings Island this year, and has been popular, park officials said.

"We are extremely excited about introducing Dinosaurs Alive! to our guests next summer," John Hildebrandt, vice president and general manager of Cedar Point, said in a statement Friday morning. "Our guests will have the opportunity to visit the Jurassic Age up close and see some amazing creatures that called it home. Dinosaurs Alive! will be educational and fun, too."

There will be an additional admission fee of $5 for the Dinosaurs Alive! attraction.

http://www.sanduskyregister.com/sandusky/news/2011/aug/19/dinosaurs-alive-coming-cedar-point-2012

Of all the above announcements I'm most excited about, I'm excited about the two new WindSeekers the most (Worlds of Fun is also rumored to get one next year)! I really enjoyed the Cedar Point one, and I honestly wouldn't mind if one eventually came to the Sunshine State! =)

Leviathan at Canada's Wonderland

http://articles.latimes.com/2011/aug/18/news/la-trb-canadas-wonderland-leviathan-coaster-08201118

Canada's Wonderland will move into the top echelon of the world's roller coaster parks in 2012 with the addition of Leviathan, the Toronto-area amusement park's 16th coaster.

The $28-million inversionless Giga coaster will include an 80-degree first drop followed by a series of camelback hills and a 115-degree overbanked hammerhead turn that will cross over the front gate of Canada's Wonderland.

Set to open in May 2012, the 3 1/2-minute ride will feature lap-bar restraints and over a mile of track along an L-shaped layout.

With 16 coasters, Canada's Wonderland will move into third place behind Six Flags Magic Mountain (18) and Cedar Point (17) in the battle for the coveted title of "Coaster Capital of the World."

Leviathan will be among the top 10 coasters in the world for height (306 feet) and speed (92 mph), according to Roller Coaster Database.

The new ride will be created by Switzerland's Bolliger & Mabillard, which also built the Behemoth hypercoaster at Canada's Wonderland in 2008.

The new metal beast already has the coaster community salivating.

"The name Leviathan comes from an Old Testament scripture in Job which refers to it as a monstrous sea creature whose combination of strength and grace no man could control," Ryan Shrout wrote at Coaster-Net. "Certainly the name sounds fitting for what Canada's Wonderland is about to unleash."

The next pics will come from the Leviathan website:

The station will be in the cleared site right next to Speed City (SC will stay), and the ride will start with a right u-turn out of the station. Afterwards, the ride will enter a 306 ft. lift hill, towering over Dragon Fire and then drop into the employee parking lot. It will then enter a 168 ft. "barrel roll" (I wouldn't call it a barrel roll though, more like a giant overbanked turn) turning right towards the front gate, followed by a high-speed turn to about 76 mph into a 185 ft. airtime camelback. Then it will go through a 147 ft. 115-degree overbanked turn in front of the entrance gate turning back, into another high-speed turn to about 60 mph into a 124 ft. airtime camelback and into a highly banked turn (turning towards Dragon Fire) next the Courtyard Catering area. The ride ends with a final brake run starting 60 ft. in the air (weird, but okay). And yes, B&M is building it, making it their first Giga Coaster.

Now for my reaction... awesome, awesome, AWESOME! Not only is this a huge investment for Canada's Wonderland, but it is also yet another step forward for B&M! This year, they built their first ever Wing Coaster (Raptor at Gardaland), added a vertical loop to their flying coaster concept (Starry Sky Ripper at World Joyland), and at the moment, Parc Asterix is building a B&M Invert with a dive loop. Now B&M is building a Giga Coaster! =D I really want to ride this someday (too bad it won't be anytime soon)!

For those who think it is too similar to Behemoth (B&M Hyper in the park)... think about it. Behemoth is about airtime hills, this ride seems to take advantage of speed more than airtime hills.

This makes me wonder what could eventually come to Kings Island and Carowinds... but for now, let's enjoy this sick ride! B)
